Abstract

Background: Medical tourism, particularly aesthetic surgery, has expanded rapidly, creating a growing need for innovative nursing models that integrate technological advances with cultural competence. Indonesia has considerable potential to become a major medical tourism hub; however, empirical evidence on techno-cultural nursing—the integration of digital innovation and cultural sensitivity—remains limited, particularly within emerging healthcare systems. Aims: This systematic review aimed to synthesize available evidence on techno-cultural nursing in the context of medical tourism, with particular attention to technological innovation, cultural competence, and patient outcomes. Methods: This systematic literature review was conducted in accordance with the PRISMA guidelines. A comprehensive literature search was performed in PubMed, ScienceDirect, and Google Scholar for studies published between 2015 and 2025. The Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) Critical Appraisal Tools were used to assess methodological quality. Of the 536 records identified, 35 studies met the predefined inclusion criteria. Data on technological applications, cultural competence frameworks, and patient outcomes were extracted and synthesized narratively. Results: Of the 35 included studies, 74% were assessed as high methodological quality, while 26% were classified as moderate quality. The thematic synthesis identified three core domains: (1) technological innovation in nursing practice, (2) cultural competence in global and aesthetic healthcare contexts, and (3) the integration of digital and cultural frameworks to improve patient safety and satisfaction. Countries implementing techno-cultural nursing models, such as South Korea, reported up to 25% higher patient satisfaction and 40% fewer postoperative complications. In contrast, Indonesia demonstrated a 30% gap in nurses’ telehealth-related skills, highlighting an important barrier to implementing technology-integrated and culturally responsive nursing care. Conclusion: Techno-cultural nursing has substantial potential to improve patient safety, satisfaction, and equity within the rapidly evolving medical tourism sector. Integrating digital innovation with cultural competence into nursing education, clinical practice, and health policy may strengthen the capacity of healthcare systems to deliver culturally responsive and technology-enabled care. For Indonesia, targeted investments in nurses’ digital competencies, cultural competence, and institutional frameworks are essential to support the development of a competitive and equitable medical tourism ecosystem. These findings provide actionable evidence for policymakers, educators, and healthcare leaders seeking to advance technology-integrated and culturally adaptive nursing systems.
